Akzidenz Groteskの父

ホフマンさんからクリスマスカードが届きました。
悲しいお知らせも書かれていました。もうひとりのタイプデザイナーが亡くなりました。折も折です。
ワインガルトの家で、直接電話しなさいっと言われて、AGのことについてお聞きしたことを思い出しました。(前にblogで書いてました -_-;;;
Günter Gerhard Lange, former artistic director of the type foundry Berthold, died on December 2 in Großhesselohe near Munich at the age of 87. Lange is considered one of the most important typeface designers and typographers of the 20th century. He designed almost 100 original fonts with benchmarks, including Arena (1951-54), Akzidenz Grotesk Buch (1969-73), Concord (1969-80) and Imago (1982 and 2000), as well as reinterpreting numerous historical font styles such as Garamond, Walbaum Buch, Caslon Buch and in 1983 Bodoni Old Face, which the French “Vogue” used for its cover. In 2000 he received the Type Directors Club Medal from the Type Directors Club of New York. Günter Gerhard Lange started working in 1950 as a freelancer for H. Berthold Messinglinienfabrik und Schriftgießerei in Berlin, was appointed artistic director in 1961 and was still a popular speaker at many conferences after H. Berthold AG went bankrupt in 1993. You can see his opening speech at Typo 1996 in full here:
