文明と文化

人間は群れてしか生存できない。その集団を支えているものが、文明と文化である。いずれも暮らしを秩序づけ、かつ安らげている。ここで、定義を設けておきたい。文明は「たれもが参加できる普遍的なもの・合理的なもの・機能的なもの」をさすのに対し、文化はむしろ不合理なものであり、特定の集団(たとえば民族)においてのみ通用する特殊なもので、他に及ぼしがたい。つまりは普遍的でない。例えば青信号で人や車は進み、赤で停止する。この取り決めは世界に及ぼしうるし、げんに及んでもいる。普遍的という意味で言えば交通信号は文明である。アメリカ素描 (新潮文庫)司馬遼太郎
文明（ぶんめい、英語: civilization, civilisation、ラテン語: civilizatio キーウィーリザティオー）とは、人間が創り出した高度な文化あるいは社会を包括的に指す。
文化（ぶんか、英語: culture、ラテン語: cultura）にはいくつかの定義が存在するが、総じていうと人間が社会の成員として獲得する振る舞いの複合された総体のことである。社会組織（年齢別グループ、地域社会、血縁組織などを含む）ごとに固有の文化があるとされ、組織の成員になるということは、その文化を身につける（身体化）ということでもある。人は同時に複数の組織に所属することが可能であり、異なる組織に共通する文化が存在することもある。もっとも文化は、次の意味で使われることも多い。
「文化と文明」というドイツ的区別を斥けたフロイトにならって、私は文化＝文明化とみなすが、「検閲官」とは、文化＝文明化の抑圧的な機能を意味している。しかるに、フロイトが「超自我」と呼ぶものは、文化＝文明化の効果を肯定的に見るものだ。それは欲動を自己規制する能力なのである。柄谷行人

This animation distils hundreds of years of culture into just five minutes. A team of historians and scientists wanted to map cultural mobility, so they tracked the births and deaths of notable individuals like David, King of Israel, and Leonardo da Vinci, from 600 BC to the present day. Using them as a proxy for skills and ideas, their map reveals intellectual hotspots and tracks how empires rise and crumble
The information comes from Freebase, a Google-owned database of well-known people and places, and other catalogues of notable individuals. The visualization was created by Maximilian Schich (University of Texas at Dallas) and Mauro Martino (IBM).
